Author Markup – How Can I Get That Picture In The Search Results?
Does your site have the proper author markup for SEO? Maybe you have seen a site or a competitor’s site in the search engine results that has a picture next to their link. Here is an example from my recent local SEO factors post -
When you search for local SEO factors, you will find my picture there next to the post. This leads to more clicks than the posts around me simply because people’s eyes are drawn to that picture, since it stands out like an island in a sea of text.
But How Did I Get That Author Markup?
It’s not because the search engines like me more than others or think I have a pretty face (although I could make strong argument for that face part). It’s because I have the proper “author markup” or “authorship markup” on my site.
Essentially, what this means is that I have the proper code on my site and on my Google Plus profile to let Google know that I am the one who authored that post. They can match this site up with me and each post I write with me, grab the picture from my Google+ profile, and include it in the results.
Getting author markup this is basically a two or three step process, depending on how you choose to set it up on your site. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, I would suggest you read this post by Don Power of Social Media Examiner that walks you through the process.
In addition, if you have a WordPress site, the Yoast SEO plugin makes this process even easier now, as it allows you to set up part of the proper author markup within the settings of the plugin. I would highly recommend the Yoast plugin for that and many other reasons if you have a WordPress site.
Why Would I Want Author Markup On My Site?
As I mentioned above the main reason that I advocate for author markup is that it allows you to have that thumbnail picture next to your listing in Google, which can give you an edge over your competitors. However, that is not the only advantage.
In addition to allowing you to have the picture, your listing will also have a link to your Google+ profile, allowing people to connect with you and learn a little more about you before or after they click on your link. They can also see what else you have written recently by clicking the “More By -Your Name-” link in the listing.
It also gives you better ownership of your content, letting Google know who wrote it first. That way, if someone comes along later and tries to use your content without your permission, you are already listed in Google’s eyes as the author.
